Empowerment: A Personal Leadership Journey

Allow me to begin this article by sharing a personal anecdote about the impact of empowerment. Over the past two decades, I have conducted leadership trainings across various sectors. At one point, I was tasked with developing coaching skills for parents and teachers within the educational system. One crucial aspect I emphasized to both teachers and parents was the importance of empowering children to independently tackle their own challenges. It was during this time that I faced a significant test of my own beliefs when my seven-year-old daughter came home in tears explaining that the teacher had humiliated her in front of the entire classroom, telling her she was acting like a baby and suggesting she should wear diapers. My daughter tearfully recounted how her face turned red and she had never felt so embarrassed in her life. As a mother, my protective instincts kicked in, and I immediately wanted to rush to the school and address the potentially damaging impact of that moment on my child. However, as I was training parents and teachers to equip their children with resources and skills to handle such situations, I decided to take a different approach.

Embracing Challenges: The Role of Self-Advocacy

Instead, I chose to engage in a conversation with my daughter, Sofia, to understand her feelings. I didn't ask her specifically about her teacher, but rather how she felt in general. To my surprise, Sofia expressed her love for her teacher and mentioned that she had no issues with her. She even admired the way the teacher normally conducted the class and interacted with the students.

Then, I asked Sofia what she thought could be done to address the situation. I wanted her to take ownership of finding a resolution. After a moment of contemplation, she suggested talking to the teacher privately and expressing how her words had made her feel.

Encouraged by her suggestion, I guided Sofia on how to approach the conversation with her teacher. We discussed the importance of using "I" statements to express her emotions and the significance of remaining calm and respectful throughout the discussion. We even did a role-play where I was the teacher and she practiced.

The next day, Sofia bravely approached her teacher during recess. She calmly explained how her words had deeply hurt her and made her feel humiliated. To her surprise, her teacher not only listened attentively but also thanked her for her honesty and courage. Choking back the tears, the teacher assured her that she would take her feedback to heart and make a conscious effort to create a more supportive and respectful classroom environment.

Sofia returned home that day with a sense of accomplishment and newfound confidence. She had successfully advocated for herself and resolved the issue without my direct intervention. She was only 7 years old! This experience taught her the power of her own voice and the importance of standing up for herself.

Now, at the age of 20, Sofia exudes a strong sense of self and effective communication skills.

Sofia's journey serves as a powerful reminder of the long-lasting effects of empowerment. That one moment in time made a significant impact on her life, shaping her into the strong, self-assured individual she is today. It is a testament to the transformative power of empowerment and its ability to foster personal growth and resilience.

Reflecting on this incident, I realized the true essence of empowerment. It is not about swooping in to fix every problem for our children or those we lead. Instead, it is about equipping them with the tools and confidence to not only navigate challenges in the moment but those that lie ahead. By empowering Sofia to address her own issue, I witnessed firsthand the transformative impact it had on her self-esteem and personal growth.
